Why Is New York City Planning to Sell and Shrink Its Libraries?

Defend our libraries, don't defund them. . . . . fund 'em, don't plunder 'em

Mayor Bloomberg defunded New York libraries at a time of increasing public use, population growth and increased city wealth, shrinking our library system to create real estate deals for wealthy real estate developers at a time of cutbacks in education and escalating disparities in opportunity. It’s an unjust and shortsighted plan that will ultimately hurt New York City’s economy and competitiveness.

It should NOT be adopted by those we have now elected to pursue better policies.

Citizens Defending Libraries rallying with the Committee To Save The New York Public Library on May 8, 2012, the day of the NYPL's Trustees meeting.  Approximately 200 protesters gathered starting at about 2:30 PM and continuing through to about 6:00 PM, covering at the demonstration's peak all three entrances to the library while some entered and attended the trustees meeting at which NYPL president Anthony Marx incorrectly told the trustees that the demonstrators had rejected offer to meet with the NYPL about the Central Library Plan.  He was corrected and later apologized, in part.
