Why Is New York City Planning to Sell and Shrink Its Libraries?

Defend our libraries, don't defund them. . . . . fund 'em, don't plunder 'em

Mayor Bloomberg defunded New York libraries at a time of increasing public use, population growth and increased city wealth, shrinking our library system to create real estate deals for wealthy real estate developers at a time of cutbacks in education and escalating disparities in opportunity. It’s an unjust and shortsighted plan that will ultimately hurt New York City’s economy and competitiveness.

It should NOT be adopted by those we have now elected to pursue better policies.

PHOTO GALLERY: June 3, 2013 Vigil At Central Reference Library Protesting Loss of Our Cultural Patrimony- Evening of NYPL Fund-Raiser

On June 3, 2013 The Committee to Save The New York Public Library and Citizens Defending Libraries a vigil in front of the 42nd Street Library Central Reference Library during the New York Public Library's Spring fundraising gala.  The vigil, acknowledging that while the groups were thankful to the NYPL's donors for supporting the library, they needed to be alerted to the NYPL's wasteful plans to gut the 42nd Street Library and sell off the Mid-Manhattan.

It was a good thing that the (relatively last minute) announcements of the vigil specified that it would take place RAIN OR SHINE, because it started at 6:00 PM immediately after a truly torrential downpour.  (It ended a bit after its official ending time of 7:30.)

heaven favored the groups as the skies cleared and the crowd that had not been discouraged from attending replaced the rain flooding the steps.

Around 100 people responded to the last minute noticing of the event not counting those who came with Reverend Billy and his choir.  The choir performed their newly composed library song, the refrain of which, taken from Ada  Louise Huxtable's last review before she died, was “You don't
update a masterpiece
.”
